This is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive at Decode Institute: “I am a Science student — can I still apply for NIFT or NID?” The short answer is yes. Let us explain the complete eligibility criteria for each major design entrance exam.

Do Science Students Have Any Advantage?
Not specifically — but Science students often have stronger analytical and spatial reasoning skills which help in the GAT section of NIFT and the logical reasoning component of UCEED. However, Arts students typically have stronger drawing foundations, which is a bigger advantage in NIFT CAT and NID DAT.
What Matters More Than Your Stream?
For all design entrance exams, your creative ability, drawing skills, design sensitivity, and observation skills matter far more than your academic stream. A Science student who practises drawing consistently can absolutely outperform an Arts student who does not prepare.
When Should You Start Preparing?
The ideal time to start is Class 10 or early Class 11. This gives you 1.5–2 years to develop your drawing skills, design awareness, and creative thinking before the exam. Even starting in Class 12 is viable if you are disciplined and consistent.
