This guide will answer every question honestly and completely, so you can make the best decision for your child’s future.

💛 Our Promise to Parents: We will never push your child towards any programme that doesn’t suit them. Our goal is to give you complete, honest information so your family can decide with full confidence.

How Parents Think About Career Choices

When a child expresses interest in design, most parents go through a very natural thought process:

“Is design a real career? Will my child get a good job? What will relatives say? Engineering and medicine are safer — why take a risk?”

These thoughts come from love and responsibility — not from a lack of support. But they are often based on outdated information about what design careers look like today.

Here is the reality of design in 2026:

Common Parent Concerns — Answered Honestly

❓ “Is design a stable career or just a hobby?”
Design is a professional, stable, and growing career. Every product, brand, building, app, film, and fashion label needs designers. The demand for trained design professionals in India has never been higher. It is absolutely not just a hobby — it is a skilled profession that commands strong salaries and respect.
❓ “Will my child get a job after a design degree?”
Yes — and often very good jobs. NID Ahmedabad and NIFT Delhi have placement rates above 90%, with companies actively recruiting on campus. IIT design graduates are among the most sought-after designers in India’s tech and product industry. The key is graduating from a quality institute — which is why preparation and the right coaching matter.
❓ “What if my child is not talented enough for design?”
Design talent is developed, not just born. Many of our most successful students had no formal drawing experience when they joined Decode. With the right training, any student with genuine interest and dedication can develop strong design skills. Our faculty will honestly assess your child’s potential and tell you exactly where they stand.
❓ “Engineering and medicine are safer choices — why take a risk with design?”
With respect — this thinking is changing rapidly. India produces over 1.5 million engineering graduates every year, and employment rates in many engineering branches are declining. Meanwhile, trained designers from top institutes are in short supply. A child who is genuinely passionate about design will thrive in it — whereas a child forced into engineering often struggles and underperforms. The real risk is putting a creative child in the wrong career.
❓ “What will relatives and society think?”
Attitudes are changing fast. When your child is working as a designer at a top company or running their own successful studio, the conversation changes entirely. NID, NIFT, and IIT — these are names that command instant respect in any household. The question is not what society thinks today — it is what your child’s life looks like in 10 years.
❓ “How much does design education cost and is it worth it?”
Government design institutes like NID and NIFT have very reasonable fees — typically ₹1.5–3 lakhs per year — because they are funded by the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Textiles respectively. IIT design programmes are also government-funded with similar fee structures. The return on investment from a top design degree is excellent. Private design colleges exist at higher costs, but the top government institutes are very affordable.
❓ “My child wants to do design but I want them to do engineering — how do we decide?”
This is the most important question — and it deserves a real conversation, not a quick answer. We strongly recommend a counselling session where both you and your child sit together with our faculty. We will assess your child’s aptitude, discuss both paths honestly, and help your family reach a decision that everyone is comfortable with. There is no pressure — only honest guidance.

Understanding Design Institutes — What Parents Need to Know

Institute Type Fees (Approx) Entrance Exam
NID — National Institute of Design Government (Ministry of Commerce) ₹1.8–2.5L/year NID DAT
NIFT — National Fashion Tech Government (Ministry of Textiles) ₹1.5–2L/year NIFT Entrance
IIT Design (B.Des) Government (IIT) ₹2–2.5L/year UCEED
Symbiosis / Pearl / MIT Private ₹3–6L/year Own entrance
Important for Parents: NID, NIFT, and IIT design programmes are government institutions — not private colleges. They have structured curricula, strong faculty, excellent placements, and the full credibility of government-backed education.

What Design Graduates Actually Do — Real Career Paths

After NIFT

NIFT graduates work as fashion designers, merchandisers, textile designers, fashion technologists, and retail managers at companies like Fabindia, W, Manyavar, H&M India, Myntra, Amazon Fashion, and leading export houses. Many start their own clothing brands and studios.

After NID

NID graduates work as product designers, UX/UI designers, communication designers, animation directors, and brand strategists at companies like Titan, Asian Paints, Tata Motors, Philips, Samsung, and top advertising agencies. Many go on to study or work abroad.

After IIT Design (UCEED)

IIT design graduates are among India’s most sought-after designers — working at Google, Microsoft, Swiggy, Zomato, Ola, and top product companies. The IIT brand, combined with design skills, is extremely powerful in today’s job market.

How to Support Your Child’s Design Dream

1. Listen first
Before reacting, understand what your child is drawn to specifically — fashion, product design, digital design, architecture? Design is a broad field and knowing their specific interest helps everyone make better decisions.
2. Attend a counselling session together
Come to Decode with your child for a free counselling session. Our faculty will assess your child’s aptitude honestly, explain all options clearly, and answer every question you have — with no pressure to enrol.
3. Give them time to develop skills
If design is the right path, support your child in developing drawing and creative skills early. Even one year of consistent practice makes a huge difference in design entrance exam results.
4. Research the institutes
Visit the NID, NIFT, and IIT websites. Look at placement records, alumni achievements, and the kind of work students create. The quality of these institutions will reassure you.
5. Trust the process
A child who is passionate about their chosen field works harder, performs better, and builds a more fulfilling career. Your belief in your child is the most powerful fuel for their success.

Why Counselling is Important Before Choosing a Career
