The NIFT Situation Test is one of the most unique and challenging rounds in any design entrance exam in India. It separates truly creative students from those who only prepared for the written paper — and it is the round where many candidates lose their NIFT seat despite scoring well in CAT and GAT.
Decode Institute of Design in Lucknow offers India’s most focused and practical Situation Test training, giving our students a decisive advantage in this critical round.
The Situation Test is a hands-on practical examination conducted by NIFT at its campuses for shortlisted B.Des candidates. It is the third and final round of the NIFT selection process (after CAT and GAT).
In the Situation Test, students are given:
| Evaluation Criteria | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Concept & Theme Interpretation | How well does your model reflect the given theme? |
| Creativity & Originality | Is your idea unique and unexpected? |
| Craftsmanship | How neatly and skillfully is the model made? |
| Material Usage | Have you used materials innovatively and efficiently? |
| Aesthetic Appeal | Does the model look visually attractive and well-composed? |
| Written Concept Note | Is your concept clearly explained in writing? |
At Decode, we train students to avoid all of these mistakes through systematic, practical workshops.

Our training exposes students to a wide variety of themes so that nothing surprises them on exam day.
Q: When is the NIFT Situation Test conducted?
The Situation Test is conducted approximately 6–8 weeks after the NIFT written exam results are announced. Only shortlisted B.Des candidates are called for it. It is held at NIFT campuses across India.
Q: Is the Situation Test only for B.Des students?
Yes, the Situation Test is only for NIFT B.Des applicants. B.FTech students are not required to appear for it.
Q: What materials are provided in the Situation Test?
NIFT provides a kit of raw materials on the day — typically including paper, cardboard, thread, pins, tape, fabric pieces, and other craft materials. The exact kit varies each year. We train students to work effectively with all common materials.
Q: Can I join Situation Test training separately without the full NIFT coaching?
Yes! We offer the Situation Test programme as a standalone intensive course, particularly useful for students who have already appeared in NIFT written exams and are waiting for results.
Q: How much does the Situation Test affect the final NIFT merit?
The Situation Test carries 100 marks out of a total of 300 marks (CAT 100 + GAT 100 + Situation Test 100) for B.Des selection. It is extremely important and cannot be taken lightly.
Every year, hundreds of students across India clear the written exam but miss their NIFT B.Des seat because they are unprepared for the Situation Test. Don’t let that happen to you.
